Reef Safe Kōkua Sun Care Is Now EWG Verified

We want to share something that means a lot to us. Our SPF 50 has officially earned the EWG Verified® mark.

To understand why this matters, it helps to know how few products actually get there. EWG reviewed nearly 2,800 sunscreens this year, and only around 60 earned their Verified mark. That's a small fraction of everything on shelves, and we're proud to be one of them.

Getting there wasn't about adding a badge to our packaging. EWG's process is thorough, and for good reason. To qualify, a sunscreen has to:

• Contain none of the 200+ ingredients on EWG's "Unacceptable" list, including chemicals linked to hormone disruption and environmental harm
• Prove real UVA protection that goes beyond current U.S. requirements, closer to Europe's stricter standards (something most American sunscreens still fall short of)
• Fully disclose every ingredient, including what's often hidden behind the word "fragrance"
• Score in the low-hazard range on EWG's Skin Deep database
• Agree to random product testing and report any issues directly to the FDA and EWG

Nothing on that list allows for shortcuts. It's built to protect people, not marketing claims.

The good news is, this didn't ask us to change who we are. We've always made Kōkua with non-nano zinc oxide as the only active ingredient, kept our formulas honest, and been upfront about what's in the bottle. Earning this mark felt like having that approach confirmed by people whose job is to check.
